Coatings combine adjustable reactivity, accelerated cure.

June 5, 2008 - Optimized for low or near-zero VOC, polyaspartic coatings offer favorable characteristics for outdoor weathering, gloss retention, and corrosion resistance. Rate of reaction and cure can be controlled to formulate mixture with potlife from 5 min to 2 hr. Product can be used as topcoat due to non-yellowing nature, and blocking of UV light prevents undercoat discoloration. Finished topcoat will bend on metal substrate without damage.

Bayer MaterialScience Demonstrates Years of Expertise with Polyaspartic Coatings at American Coatings Show

Bayer MaterialScience stands at forefront of low-VOC coating technology:

Charlotte, N.C., June 2, 2008 - In addition to its broad portfolio of polyurethane and polyurea coatings, Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) LLC also offers a breadth of expertise in one of the latest developments in coatings technology: polyaspartic coatings. The most recent advances in polyaspartic coating technology have concentrated on achieving low, or near-zero VOC coatings. In addition to this breakthrough benefit, polyaspartic coatings have a unique, adjustable reactivity with the capability for fast-curing that can provide significant, money-saving productivity improvements, along with good outdoor weathering, high gloss retention and excellent corrosion resistance.

Some of BMS' latest accomplishments in polyaspartic coatings will be featured at the BMS booth, #1545, at the American Coatings Show, June 2-5, at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Polyaspartic coatings allow formulators the flexibility to control the rate of reaction and cure, providing the option to formulate a mixture with a potlife ranging from five minutes to two hours. In most cases, the application of polyaspartic coatings can be done with standard spray equipment, and in many instances a single coat is all that's required. Polyaspartic coatings are often used as a topcoat due to their non-yellowing nature, and the coatings also block ultraviolet light from discoloring undercoats. The coatings can be applied to a wide range of substrates in both low-temperature and high-humidity environments, and the finished topcoat will bend on a metal substrate without damage.

"Polyaspartic technology is similar to 2-component aliphatic polyurethane coatings in its applications and performance characteristics, but with noteworthy advantages including the ability to be formulated to higher solids and applied at higher film builds," said Dr. Ed Squiller, director, Corrosion and Construction, Business Development, BMS. "The advantages of polyaspartic technology, compounded with the proven health safety of these materials, make polyaspartic coatings an excellent option for coating applications."

Some notable applications of BMS polyaspartic coatings include a specially formulated color topcoat for an external concrete-protecting membrane at the Atlanta Braves' spring training facility at Wide World of Sports Disney World; concrete surface restoration coating at Dodger Stadium; and clear topcoats for more than 70,000 square feet of decorative concrete flooring at Ave Maria University in Ave Maria, Fla. In all of these applications, BMS worked closely with contractors and suppliers to arrive at the desired durability and finished appearance within a tight timeframe.
