Machining Inserts handle aerospace/high-temperature alloys.

October 31, 2007 - KY4300(TM) cutting ceramic inserts exhibit high-temperature strength and hardness suited for aerospace parts-machining applications involving Inconel, Stellite, Waspalloy, Hastelloy, and other high-temperature alloys. Composed of aluminum oxide reinforced with silicon carbide whiskers, products can promote optimal surface finishes at lower cutting forces. They are also suited for use in automotive industry and roll products segment.

Kennametal Introduces KY4300 Inserts for Aerospace and High-Temperature Alloys

(LATROBE, PA) - KY4300(TM) ceramic, the newest member of the Kyon® cutting ceramics family from Kennametal, is especially well-suited for aerospace parts-machining applications involving Inconel, Stellite, Waspalloy, Hastelloy, and other high-temperature alloys. When machining Inconel 718, for example, you can increase speeds four to five times compared to using carbide inserts. It can be equally productive in the automotive industry, machining alloyed gray cast-iron brake disks, and in the roll products segment removing casting crust or heavily worn rolling surfaces.

KY4300 inserts are composed of aluminum oxide reinforced with silicon carbide whiskers. These whiskers possess high mechanical strength and act like reinforcing steel bars in concrete, improving the strength and fracture toughness of the cutting insert.

KY4300 tools have excellent high-temperature strength and hardness, says Salah Taoufik, Kennametal's Global Product Manager, Turning. Compared to other ceramic grades, speeds can be increased 10 to 20% in most applications, with the results being better surface finishes at lower cutting forces.

Kennametal Inc. is a world leader in the development, manufacture, application, and supply of high-quality metalcutting tooling, toolholders, and related products. It is the world's leading tooling supplier to the mining and road construction industries and offers the most complete array of milling, turning, and holemaking products to manufacturers worldwide.
