Turning Inserts are suited for use in steel processing.

October 4, 2005 - Engineered for finish-turning to medium machining of all steel workpieces, turning grade KC9105 incorporates core carbide substrate with deformation resistance that allows dry machining and long cuts. Cobalt enrichment at periphery lends to insert edge security, while chemical vapor deposition coating technology ensures wear and thermal resistance. Product is available in KennaPerfect Kenloc geometries -FF, -FN, -MN, -RP, -RN, -FW, and -MW.

Faster, Tougher Kennametal Turning Inserts Boost Steel Processing Productivity

(LATROBE, PA) - Kennametal's new turning grade KC9105 enables high-productivity machining of steels by allowing up to 40% higher cutting speeds without sacrificing toughness.

"Conventional thinking for this kind of finishing insert usually meant a tradeoff between wear resistance and toughness," explains Richard Denton, Kennametal's manager for global lathe products. "KC9105 eliminates this tradeoff."

Specifically, KC9105 is engineered for high-performance finish-turning to medium machining of all steel workpieces, including carbon, alloy, and tool steels, as well as ferritic, martensitic, and precipitation-hardened stainless steels. Products that can take advantage of KC9105's high productivity include transmission components, axles, and gears in automotive and transportation markets, and shafts, bearings, and pump housings in general engineering applications.

Kent Mizgalski, manager of insert product development at Kennametal, outlines the technology behind KC9105's top performance. At the core is an advanced carbide substrate with excellent deformation resistance that allows dry machining and long cuts.

KC9105 can also be used with coolant at high speeds with excellent tool life. Cobalt enrichment at the periphery provides excellent insert edge security. An advanced chemical vapor deposition coating technology assures excellent wear and thermal resistance. New post-coat treatments dramatically reduce chip hammering and built-up edges, thereby providing long tool life. "The result is a highly wear-resistant insert grade combined with good edge toughness," Mizgalski says. "Speed increases up to 40% are possible when turning most steels."

KC9105 is available immediately and is initially launched in seven KennaPerfect Kenloc geometries for finishing to medium machining operations. Available geometries are: -FF, -FN, -MN, -RP, -RN, -FW, and -MW. For more information, contact your local Kennametal sales agent or visit www.kennametal.com.
