Original Press Release:

Ultra-Low Power Proximity Card Reader

RF IDeas today introduced the pcProx® LP, its low-power proximity card reader compatible with HID's line of proximity cards and tokens. RF IDeas is targeting the Microsoft Windows CE operating system devices, PDAs, tablet PCs, and other hand-held units. The pcProx-LP is available in USB and RS-232 interfaces. The new pcProx-LP draws a scant 20 milli-watts during badge reading operation and xx micro-watts otherwise. The reader comes complete with configurable flash memory and is also compatible with RF IDeas compact flash card plug-in module for PDAs such as the COMPAQ 2200 series.

This greatly expands the use of proximity security badges to tackle portable solutions such as evacuation mustering, check the badges of event participants, first responders, mobile ID /visitor management, homeland security applications including airport personnel verification, incident reporting, high-rise building security and safety.

Designed for use with proximity access control cards, the pcProx-LP reader can scan the proximity card and display decoded identification information on the PDA's display at the location of the cursor in less one-second.

The pcProx-LP connects to Tablet PCs via the USB port and to a PDA via RF IDeas compact flash interface adaptor module. This interface then attaches to the USB cable of the pcProx-USB reader. The pcProx-LP has a small footprint "XX x XX inches" making it suitable for solutions requiring portability. The cardholder's identity can be positively verified via visual comparison or other means through the use of one of RF IDeas third party providers.

Additionally the pcProx-USB can be used as an enrollment station, an employee identification card reader, or a Windows desktop logon reader.
