Face Mills offer high rake angles for longer tool life.

August 12, 2002 - KSSM face mills include 0, 15, and 45° lead angle cutters and inserts with substrates and coatings designed for milling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, nonferrous, and high temperature alloys. They accept square inserts that provide 4 cutting edges. Use of screws rather than clamps to lock inserts provides secure seating, which helps prevent insert breakage. KC725M universal coated carbide grade features physical vapor deposition TiN/TiCN/TiN coating.

New Kennametal Milling Program Offers Higher Rakes for Longer Tool Life

Latrobe, PA (August 1, 2002) -- Kennametal has introduced a new face milling program, including cutters and inserts, that provides higher positive rake angles than competitive cutters for longer tool life and lower horsepower consumption. New KSSM face mills include 0 degree, 15 degree, and 45 degree lead angle cutters and inserts with substrates and coatings designed for milling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, nonferrous, and high temperature alloys under a wide range of conditions. "These new cutters and inserts provide the industry's highest rake angles," said Mark White, Marketing Product Manager for Kennametal. "This helps explain why lab tests show that they consistently provide longer tool life and draw less horsepower than comparable competitive products."

KSSM face mills are designed to accept square inserts that provide four cutting edges. The 90 degree cutters handle flat wall cuts, the 15 degree lead angle cutters offer high depths of cut, and the 45 degree lead angle cutters offer the freest cutting. Available insert styles offer four different topographies with each rake angle being significantly higher than comparable competitive styles. "The use of screws rather than clamps to lock the inserts provides more secure seating which helps prevent insert breakage," said Jim Waggle, Milling Systems Engineer. "A carbide shim underneath the insert also increases cutter life by protecting the cutter body in case the insert breaks. It also improves insert stability by providing a rigid seat."

Kennametal also offers a wide range of high-performance milling grades for the new cutters. KC725M is a universal coated carbide grade with a physical vapor deposition TiN/TiCN/TiN coating for milling steel, stainless steel, and nodular iron. This material stands up to the shock of heavier cuts and also handles the heat involved in high-speed cutting. By providing excellent performance over a wide range of materials and applications, KC725M often makes it possible to reduce inventory cost and tool setup time. Twelve other grades are also available to maximize performance in specific applications and/or workpiece materials.

Kennametal KSSM face mills also provide a better surface finish versus competitive products. "We have optimized the radius on the face of the insert to provide a better surface finish with a screw-on product," Waggle said. "The screw-on design also lowers the number of components required, which reduces tolerance buildup and increases the edge-to-edge repeatability." Kennametal offers ground inserts for the best surface finishes and pressed inserts as a lower cost utility option. While KSSM milling cutters with ground inserts can almost always provide a surface finish that meets specifications, wiper inserts are also available for the most demanding requirements.
